The original art actually
included Rick Flag, Amanda Waller, Captain Boomerang and Night Shade in
what was group portrait. But I was never happy with the way the rest of
the team came out so I cropped it to the portion that only has Deadshot,
Count Vertigo and Bronze Tiger.
Just for the record I still hate
DC's reboot of Task Force X as I do both live action films. For me The
Suicide Squad will be forever be The John Ostrander series of the late
80s to early 90s. I was thinking about how one of the earliest Squad missions back in the original series (issues 5-7) was a hostage rescue operation in russia otherwise then known as the soviet union. With everything going on these days between putin's (may you burn in Hell) invasion of Ukraine and Britney Griner being held as a political hostage I can appreciate those old issues more then ever now. We sure could use a Task Force X about now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhRvfDoO2Jg

Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-58225847264436447052022-03-22T21:53:00.008-07:002023-05-01T07:34:13.605-07:00Hayoth cameo in the DoomsDay Clock multiverse and some awesome new Ostrander era Suicide Squad fan art

I didn't think I was ever gonna do another posting on this blog again but something got my attention recently I really felt like talking about. By chance I came across a panel during a Google search of the Israeli super commando team The Hayoth which I did not recognize from the pages of The Suicide Squad, The Spector or Checkmate from the pre-reboot era of DC Comics. It turns out this panel was from a cameo appearance the team made in The Doomsday Clock series (2019-2020) which was some kind DC Multiverse Watchman cross over story line. In this version of The Hayoth we have all the original characters (Ramban, Judith, Golem and Dybukk) along with a couple additions. One of which is Seraph, who appears to be the team leader.

Seraph's real name is Chaim Levon and he was a Hebrew school teacher. As you can see the last time I posted anything was way back in January. So clearly this blog site is pretty much done. If you think of each posting as a mission then this is the final one. But for the sake of ceremony I thought I'd just have one last posting/mission to bring this Suicide Squad blog to an official close. I thought I might also use this opportunity to share a few final thoughts and tie up some loose ends in the process. I did see Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and thought it was over all not bad. It wasn't with out it's problems but I'm not in the least bit interested in getting into all that it is what it is. But I'll admit, between the humor, action and explicit nature it was certainly entertaining if nothing else. So that's as close as it gets to any sort of movie review from me. The live action movie still sucks to me every bit as much as the day I saw it in case any one was wondering. And I could still give a rat's ass about anything going on with The Squad as far as new comics goes that hasn't changed either. So long folks.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-62987582827126451192018-01-14T09:51:00.002-08:002023-05-01T07:34:48.363-07:00DC Legends . . . not quite the stuff of legend for me

Ya know folks I may get a little bit of heat about this but I after doing some reading of the DC Legends mini-series this weekend I'm not that big of a fan. Now ofcourse this isn't the first time I've read the series but even back then it honestly didn't grab me despite all it had going for it. You had The Squad's first mission along with a bunch of some of the best heroes and villains in the DC Universe's history and great talent on the series like John Ostrander and John Byrne. I feel the same way about the original Crisis on Infinite Earths maxi-series after having finally read it I felt like it was really over rated despite it's legendary status among the DC readership. Can't quite put my finger on it as far as the why but both of these series just didn't make for a great read for me unlike say for example Marvel's original Secret Wars which was like an adrenaline charged page turner which holds up pretty good even today.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-67338906762360502212017-11-04T19:41:00.002-07:002023-08-04T22:35:07.438-07:00Awesome classic Ragman fan art

Absolutely bad ass! This is some top notch fan art, the figure composition, the colors and even the detail in the costume. And ofcourse I love the extra added touch of Ragman tearing up a nazi flag while also sporting a Magen David (star of David) pendant. All very appropriate for our "clothe golem" Jewish avenger. And in case you were wondering, this is where I found it https://www.deviantart.com/art/Ragman-705702433
Ya know it's ironic that this tragic news about Len Wein's passing should come just over a week after I fished this issue of Comics Interview 32 out of a quarter box. Which as you may have guessed I grabbed because of The Swamp Thing article inside. Cheesy as the early 80s Wes Craven film was it seemed really cool to me at the time and it was actually my introduction to The Swamp Thing character. And then one day I saw an issue at a drug store some where and that would be the beginning of what was a pretty big Swamp Thing collection. I even had this Swamp Thing action figure at one point it was actually kinda cool it had this detachable hand with a line attached to it that pulls the hand like a fisherman's reel.
As for Wolverine, I was a fan long before it was hip to be a Wolverine fan in the 80s I collected every appearance I could find. Back then a Wolverine appearance in a non-X-Men title was always guaranteed to bump up it's value but I didn't care much about that I just wanted to read more Wolverine and seeing him interact with other Marvel super heroes from Captain America to Spider-Man and even ROM was beyond awesome. Ofcourse Wein's body of work went far beyond just co-creating Swamp Thing and Wolverine and I think it's nice to know all that will still be around for future generations to enjoy.
September 15th Update: So now we have it happen again this week. Another big name from our child hood as comic book and sci-fi fans has passed away. This time it was Harry Dean Stanton who died at 91. Stanton has had a long career on both the big screen and small spanning for decades. I knew him best as Brett from ALIEN and as Brain from Escape from New York. And don't forget about Stanton's brief appearance in the first Avengers film where he plays a security guard who finds Bruce Banner amid a mass of debris caused by him falling through the roof of an abandoned building while he was The Hulk.
Obviously I like this fan art other wise I wouldn't have posted it here but at the same time part of me wants to see even more black heroes from Marvel and DC in here kinda like those Marvel Universe Handbook or DC Who's Who montage covers. Off the top of my head specifically I'm thinking Luke Cage, Misty Knight, Blade, the John Stewart Green Lantern and Mr. Fantastic. Don't know if Amanda Waller quite fits the profile of what defines a "super hero" but I'd include her just on general principle.
Ok and now for another kind of black power. Just by chance today I passed through The 4th Annual Vintage Car Show in Downtown Hayward (California) while running some errands and look what they had there. Not at all a fan of the tim burton Batman films (or much of anything from burton for that matter) but I have to admit the batmobile in those movies was one of the few things they had going for them. The tumbler is my favorite though.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-71439579529316525562017-08-07T22:59:00.000-07:002017-08-20T00:59:54.244-07:00The Suicide Squad goes nuclear

Ya know with all this shit going on with north korea and their nuclear program not to mention renewed tensions with russia and the threat of islamic terrorists trying to get their filthy hands on that shit for years now it got me thinking about Firestorm 64 written by John Ostrander. The issue came out in 1987 in which the Cold War was still going on here in the real world even though it would be only a few years later that the soviet union would collapse. For about the next two decades or so we really didn't think about nuclear war as something that we had to worry about any more.
So this issue was part of a story arc in which Ronald and professor Stein (who was dying of a brain tumor at the time) as Firestorm attempted to coerce the nuclear armed nations of the world into dismantling their nuclear arsenals under the threat of doing it for them if they didn't comply. A some what similar premise to the awful Superman 4 film which ironically also came out in 1987. Yeah that didn't go over to well and as a result Firestorm was declared an outlaw and become subject to arrest. As a result Captain Atom (prior to this issue), Task Force X, The Justice League mixed it up with Firestorm in an attempt to end his crusade.
The story line continues and comes to a head in Firestorm annual 2 in which The Squad and The League start to fight each other. Adding to the mayhem The Parasite who at the time was in The Squad goes rogue. Firestorm manages to deal with The Parasite and make his escape only to be confronted in the Nevada desert by a russian super powered agent named Pozhar. The show down happens shortly before professor Stein's tumor finally kills him and disrupts the Firestorm bond in the process which happens only seconds before both the U.S. and Soviet governments try to nuke both combatants. Good stuff, makes me miss the 80s all that much more.
Just a heads up, there's a ton of 2017 Comic-Con videos containing panels of just about every up coming sci-fi/comic book movie and TV series both on cable and NetFlix this year. It's astonishing how many big time A list celebrities are at this event in San Diego now. Back when I went in 1994 it was pretty big but nothing like it is now. A Hell of a lot easier and cheaper to get into back then as well, now it's almost like you gotta know somebody on the inside in order to get into the con.
Just heard the sad news (leukemia) a couple hours ago and I wanted to get a posting up this weekend with a little bit of my thoughts on West's career. As a kid I kinda used to like the original Batman TV show because like Spiderman on The Electric company it was one of the very few live action outlets available for some of my favorite comic book characters. As I got older I won't lie I did develop a certain degree of disdain for the show because of it's campyness although I certainly never felt that way for West himself who by all accounts has always been a stand up guy in his personal life.
I'm really glad that over the years he managed to in part rejuvenate his show biz career despite his type casting handicap with voice acting work on The Simpsons and The Family Guy. As some of you may remember he was also the voice actor in The Grey Ghost episode of the Batman animated series. That series brought a lot of critical acclaim and respect to the super hero genre and that episode in particular was certainly one of the best if not the best episode of the series. Ironically, West plays an out of work actor who can't couldn't find new acting gigs due to a type casting handicap but would go on to help Batman solve a series of crimes carried out by some psychotic fan boy using sophisticated remote controlled toys.

Ya know I have to admit even though I came to grow weary of the original Batman TV show I always maintained my fondness for the classic Batmobile from that series (I dug the Batboat to). I used to have the original die cast ones from Corgi but at least I still have a couple packaged ones from a Hotwheels release some 8 or 9 years ago which I saw in a Dollar store of all places. Looking back I should have picked up more of them. As a crime fighter you probably don't want to drive around seated in an open canopy (not much protection from gun fire) but that's ok it was such a cool design I still love it till this day.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-9589784958398932202017-05-23T09:38:00.002-07:002017-05-23T23:32:02.761-07:00Farewell 007

So I'm just doing this spur of the moment posting on what is now mostly an in active blog site. Only heard the sad news about an hour ago about Roger Moore passing away at 89 from cancer. Right on the heels of Sound Garden's front man Chris Cornell no less but in his case his death was in some ways even more tragic given that he was only in his 50s. I figured I better throw something on the internet especially with all this russia/trump investigation and terror attack in Manchester drowning out all other news stories including this one. Again, what seemed to be one of those timeless celebrity icons from my child hood has left us. There's really not much of anything I can say that you don't know or haven't heard already if you know anything about Roger Moore's career so let me pivot a bit to some of the 007 toys I used to have when I was a kid.
Ya know I still see the 007 submarine car (Corgi) from time to time at comic and toy conventions, usually going for a pretty hefty price tag. Especially for the ones that are in better condition part of that being if the 007 logo sticker is still present and not too tattered and faded.

I also used to have both the large scale and smaller Moon Raker shuttle craft toys (also from Corgi). Both featured retractable landing gears and cargo bay doors that open. But the bigger shuttle also had a removable satellite which had extending solar panels where as the smaller shuttle just had a fixed molded piece in it but I loved both em just the same. I see the smaller shuttle once in a while at a con but have yet to come across the bigger one. I wonder if all these 007 toys will bump up in value now?
Unfucken believable! I literally only 30 moments ago just read the sad news about Bill Paxton having passed away during some sort of surgical procedure. Here we go again with yet another iconic actor from the sci-fi genre of the 80s passing away and we're not even done with February yet. Many people wouldn't know that his list of credits both in front and behind the camera is very extensive but I'm not going to get into a long winded posting about his fantastic career. But suffice it to say I loved Bill Paxton he's been in some great films both big and small that I've enjoyed since the mid 80s.
The land mark role that put him on the map no doubt was private Hudson from ALIENS but we actually saw Bill before that in a small part in the original classic Terminator film. Since then he's played in a number of great films like Tombstone, Apollo 13 and One False Move. He's also done some work on the small screen I remember him in particular most recently from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D when that show was actually watchable. Bill was also in another great yet little known film that's one of my favorites from his acting resume. The movie is a modern day vampire film from the late 80s called Near Dark in which Paxton plays a psychotic vampire with an entertaining and twisted sense of humor when it comes to hunting his prey and taking on his enemies.

I remember when I first saw this Starfire bonus pin-up page back when I was a kid in the mid 80s. It was in the back pages of some issue of Ambush Bug (#2) which I was browsing at for reasons that I can't remember since I never had any interest in that character. I remember being so sprung at the time to see something like this in a comic book by a main stream publisher like DC.
But ofcourse by today's standards this is quite tame. Especially when you consider how the character has been re-imagined in the DCU reboot. At the time I was tempted to buy the issue just for that bonus pin-up page alone but just couldn't bring myself to paying the cover price for an issue of Ambush Bug. I've seen that same issue in $1 boxes a couple times recently but it's just as well to have found this Starfire bonus pin up online.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-89680805086049962892017-01-15T12:39:00.000-08:002017-01-15T12:50:08.380-08:00I guess KOBRA had a "heart attack" in the old DCU

I found this image on the KOBRA DC Wikia page so now I finally know what happened to one of my favorite villains in the old DCU. Well I suppose it was a fitting end for him after all he was a terrorist and a regular nemesis for both Checkmate and The Suicide Squad. The Janus Directive was just one good example of that. There's the kind of heart attack you get as a result of health issues and then there's the kind you can get from just pissing off Black Adam. So let's move on to what else I've got for you no comment leaving ingrates.
I just happened to come across this good video on youtube that explains the history of the Suicide Squad reiterations in the New DC Universe. What I liked about it is how it underscores the points I had made for the past few years about everything that was wrong with the Suicide Squad's reboot. A point I tried to make to the initial writer Adam Glass when I found him on facebook years ago . . .

Ofcourse I ended up dropping the series during Glass's tenure as the writer feeling like he just wasn't picking up what I was laying down to him. The next reiteration known as The "New" Squad Squad written by who ever was pretty much more of the same ol same ol with the exception of Deadshot finally having his signature facial hair. But today I feel total vindication since clearly DC felt it necessary to reboot The Squad yet again with a line up that to date is the closest thing we've seen since the Ostrander era.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-8033413507866803872017-01-07T18:35:00.000-08:002017-01-15T12:39:34.785-08:00Janus Directive splash page

It seems after all there may yet be a little bit of Suicide Squad stuff to blog about as we kick off 2017. I was at the library today when I noticed a Janus Directive trade paper back on the shelf. I never knew there was a TPB of that multi-titled DC story line in which a conspiracy devised by Kobra turns all the U.S. meta human special ops organizations against each other. The top part of this splash page ( jeez, did they really have to draw Bronze Tiger with that excessive bulge in his costume?) from Checkmate 15 can be found at the DC Wikia page but I mostly like the bottom half with the character chess pieces.
Also today, I was reading Justice League vs Suicide Squad # 3 on Youtube. I have to admit it was actually pretty good. Top notch art with some well done character development and a story line that looks very promising.
I recently found this art work on DC's wikia page. Although I don't know where this art work originated from I'm always never the less delighted to uncover some Suicide Squad related art from the late 80s and 90s. We see there Rick Flag and Bronze Tiger along with Karen Grace (mission casualty) who's got some some "history" with Flag back from their pre Ostrander Squad days together. There's also The Privateer (a.k.a Mark Shaw), a former manhunter recruited to help Task Force X for the Manhunter Louisiana fortress assault mission (see Millennium week 4, Suicide Squad 8 and 9).
Ok I just wanted to open up this next segment of the posting by saying I was a graphic designer for 10 years so I thought these panels were funny as Hell. Last night I came across this these panels (issue 4) while watching some youtube videos that basically let you read the Suicide Squad Rebirth series in slide show format they have issues 1- 7 so far. Considering how easy it is to read a comic book series these days online I think you must really really want to buy something for the sake of having a hard cover in your collection.
Anyways, this latest Squad series is much of an improvement from what DC came up with when the DCU relaunch first happened not to mention The Squad title reboots prior to Rebirth. This rebirth series is certainly worth taking the time to read on youtube but not worth buying and taking up space at home. It does have it's moments, like Captain Boomerang getting killed in issue 2. Just go to Youtube and paste the following in the search bar...suicide squad rebirth #1. Or start with a later issue but either way after the video finishes it'll go right to what ever the following issue is until you finally reach # 7.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-39581119687868502132016-11-25T17:16:00.004-08:002023-05-01T07:37:18.564-07:00Swamp Thing and The Golem

I recently found a couple of volume 2 Swamp Thing issues (only fitty cent each) from the early 80s I used to have back in the day. I really like rereading old issues like these because you really do often get more out of it when you read these stories as an adult as opposed to a teenager. I had almost forgotten how the early story line of that series was heavily steeped with an Old Testament and World War II narrative mixed in with some of the same Jewish folklore that Ragman mine is derived from. The few panels I posted here from Swamp Thing 11 do a good job of explaining the nature of The Golem.
In this story line Swamp Thing teams up with a group of guys going after this evil mutant girl who they think is the herald of the coming "anti-Christ" that will bring the apocalypse with him when he/it comes to Earth. As you can see here they utilize a golem to help fight this evil mutant but we see later that the golem can sometimes get confused about it's mission due to it lacking a soul and mind. Think of a computer given a task a bit too complex for it's fairly simple programming. Let me digress for a moment to make this point. This imperfection in the golem is a fundamental aspect of the Ragman suite which was created from rags with a variation of the golem spell by Jewish mystics in order to create a protector with a human mind and hence the ability to reason.

Did you know that out of the entire Ostrander run for The Suicide Squad there was only one annual? And admittedly despite having been written by John Ostrander it wasn't a very good read in what was other wise an awesome series. But it did have it's moments like the exchange between Rick Flag and Boomerang as well as between Shade and Manhunter. In case you didn't know during his time with Task Force X Shade was known for having something of a condescending attitude toward Earth technology which other Squad members found to be annoying at times. So it was kinda funny seeing someone talk down to him for a change when it comes to the comprehension.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-90531101706911123942016-08-20T15:04:00.000-07:002016-08-23T10:07:24.734-07:00Amanda Waller vs Barack Obama

So just this past Wednesday DC Comics relaunched for what I believe is the 3rd reboot of the Suicide Squad title since the inception of the New DCU. There was the original series that was part of the New 52 line up that eventually gave way to another title called "The New Suicide Squad". I dropped the original title after issue 11 and didn't keep up much with what went on with the series after that but I think that first series ended some where in the 20s and then became the "New" Suicide Squad and who knows what after that.
Although not getting a lot of great word of mouth the Suicide Squad movie is something of a commercial success so I guess DC Comics is looking to capitalize on that with a relaunch of the title that mirrors the movie in many respects.
Coincidentally we now have a Suicide Squad that looks a little more like the Ostrander series from the old DCU. Waller is a plus size woman again along with Rick Flag and Enchantress being added to the line up of Squad members. Also, Deadshot a.ka. Floyd Lawton is back to having his signature mustache/goatee but that might have been the case again after I dropped the first series for all I know. All that aside this ideological debate between Waller and Obama was pretty well written I have to say I really enjoyed it. Not saying I'm gonna go out and buy this book but for now it's at least worth keeping an eye on. If you want to read a real review of the Suicide Squad Rebirth there's close to a half o dozen videos on youtube already among other places on the internet.
August 23rd update
A little something interesting here I wanted to share with any Ragman fans out there. I'm sure most of you recognize this Batwoman cover art and have probably figured out the writing at the bottom left is Hebrew. But I doubt most any of you knew what it meant. Pronounced "emet", that's Hebrew for the word truth. Which is interesting because in according to Jewish golem folklore part of the spell that animates the clay creature known as the golem is to inscribe the word truth on it's head. As some of you know the Ragman suite was created from a variant of the golem spell so I imagine that has something to do with the Hebrew inscription of that Ragman dominated Batwoman 35 cover art. Almost bought that issue at one point but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for on the inside.
Ya know the day before I saw the movie I had caught this cool scene on youtube of Waller having the Enchantress magically teleporting some military secrets out of iran during a meeting with some top brass to help make the case for the Task Force X program and I was like fucken eh. Finally I'm at the theater and the movie starts and it opens up with this introduction of the main characters that reminded me of DC's Assault on Arkham and I started thinking that this might not be bad after all. I even liked a lot of the music in the movie especially the use of these classic songs that really were spot on for the moment. Probably the best example was the Rolling Stone's Sympathy for The Devil with the introduction scene for Waller. Unfortunately that along with some funny one liners is about all the movie really has going for it.
I think my biggest problem with the movie was the plot. The disaster Task Force X gets called up for is over some shit (shit that I never really fully quite understood) The Enchantress stirs up so basically she's not even a member of The Squad she's actually in effect the primary villain of the movie. That didn't really work for me, and aside from that the movie felt a bit disjointed as far as how the story flowed. Also, there were a few cool scenes from the trailers that were absent in the film I didn't like that much either.
Some of the characters hardly made any impression at all on me. Ok we had Slipknot. who's purpose in the movie literally was to be a mission fatality I mean they gave that character nothing to do but die. They don't even introduce him in the movie he just shows up and dies 15 minute later after 2 or 3 lines. Katana seemed to also show up out of no where and in spite of her swinging around this soul stealing sword she still some how manages to be absent from the story line. Boomerang didn't have much to do either other then some extra comedy relief. Killer Croc was more present in the film but they didn't do much to develop his character into something a little less predictable and two dimensional. They probably did a little bit better with the Rick Flagg character then the before mentioned cast members. Then there's El Diablo, who they did alright with his character up until the end when he transforms into some kind of demonic "Aztecy" fire kinda thing for what was supposed to be this epic battle scene you probably won't care much about at that point in the movie even though Diablo sacrifices his life for the mission. That was one of those huh? moments. Are all my spoilers bothering you? It's ok trust me you really won't care much once you start watching the movie.
As expected the stand out characters were Amanda Waller, Deadshot and Harley Quinn what you saw in the movie trailers as far as how those characters are portrayed is pretty much what you get in the movie. Jared Leto as The Joker wasn't bad but certainly fell short of Heath Ledger's legendary performance. Another issue that bugged me was how through out the movie many of the character's seemed to be out of character. Toward the end of the movie Rick Flagg tries to give Deadshot a hug and I'm like no way that would ever happen. In any universe cinematic or published you couldn't even get a hand shake out of those two they can't stand each other. I think you'd best save your money for now and wait for this movie to show up at a nearby Redbox.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-29879094952581133542016-07-17T08:38:00.002-07:002016-07-17T09:08:51.777-07:00Stop, Waller Time!

Apparently all this old school Amanda Waller fan art has been up for a little while on deviant art I just happened to have discovered it today. It's nice to have something to post about here for a change I realize it's been a while. Just in time it would seem for our new commentator to this blog welcome Jeson Holder now the number of people following this site might be up to 3 now how exciting. The fan art on the bottom is fairly self explanatory but the top side fan art leaves a bit more to the imagination. I like how it shows that Waller isn't just some pencil pushing bureaucrat despite being a plus size middle age woman she's willing to get into the fight when she has to http://biram-ba.deviantart.com/art/Amanda-Waller-486215893
Well the Suicide Squad movie isn't quite so much off in the distance any more. No way of knowing for sure if it'll be any good but I know I'll see it at some point no matter what I hear about it although I'll most certainly be catching a matinee. But good or bad or some thing in between I'll certainly be doing a review of it here so all 3 or 4 of you who follow this blog still can see what I thought of the movie.

Was reading an online article yesterday from the Philly Voice about how a Philadelphia newsstand had turned to comics to help keep business afloat. As you can see to the left there those are a copy of Suicide Squad 41 and 50. Newsstands in big cities were quite common back in the 80s but in 2016 they're about as common as an honest politician. As both an old school comic book fan and as someone who also worked in the news paper industry at one time I wish these guys the best of luck.Shlomo Ben Hungstienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07238927958290618109noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7144911575623105385.post-32369506312414903682016-03-27T09:10:00.000-07:002016-04-07T20:45:53.465-07:00Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice almost spoiler free review

Just saw the movie Saturday night thanks to advanced tickets and reserved seating. So how was it? In a nut shell it was a very thoughtfully crafted film that did a good job on covering a lot of necessary points of development and continuity. But, it wasn't with out perhaps at least one glaring problem. Although I'm not sure the word "problem" quite fits here. First off, my biggest questions going into the film was Batman's brawl with Superman how exactly does he pull it off? And what about Jesse Eisenberg as a re-imagined Lex Luther?
Ben Affleck was superb as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, a truly worthy successor to Christian Bale's portrayal. And I'm happy to say although not the most original of concepts we do get a clear and plausible understanding of how Batman manages to go mano e mano against The Man of Steel with his exo-skeleton armor suite. When it comes to Eisenberg's Lex Luther I think he pulls that off pretty good. It's not quite the Lex Luther we're used to but it works even though his eccentric personality almost has a Joker quality to it. His scientific genius, government connections, capacity for cruelty, skills in manipulation and even his obvious education in classical literature are intact among other cornerstone Lex Luther character traits. If you liked Man of Steele (I certainly did!), which this movie is basically a sequel to then you'll enjoy all the returning cast members minus Jimmy Olsen who was absent in the movie.
The other big question was the Wonder Woman big screen debut. Although not given a whole lot in the way of dialogue Gal Gadot handles her role quite well as both a warrior and covert ops agent with almost a Catwoman like sense of stealth. We don't get to see the same kind of insight into her psyche as we do with Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent which was explored quite intensely in the film but I think the movie gives us just enough for now. And speaking of which, how exactly does Batman come to hate Superman so much to the point where he tries to take him out? A burning question for many especially for the more superficial fans who really only know these characters beyond the old school pop culture stand point as opposed to understanding them better as contemporary characters in all they're complexities. The movie delivers on that front to by the time these heroes have they're highly anticipated throw down you really understand how it came to this. And yes we do get to see other snippets of the future Justice Leaguers which are cleverly and other wise well woven into the movie's story line.
The Doomsday battle goes pretty much as expected and in some ways some managed to be a bit tedious and yet somehow rushed at the same time. But that's not to say it wasn't good or other wise not relevant to the plot especially since it acts as the common threat which brings all 3 heroes together. There are some logic gaps as is the case in most of these sorts of sci-fi Superhero movies. But I think the biggest over all "problem" the movie had was the somewhat slow pacing for the first half of the film. I do get it in part there was a lot to cover to be sure. And it's also important to remember that this movie is not only a Man of Steel sequel but it's also laying down most of the ground work for a Justice League film which no doubt will be even more action pact.
But that being said, a slightly shorter running time might have served the film better from a movie going experience stand point. Some people might have a problem with many of the bad guy deaths in the movie but I'm ok with it. It's fucken 2016 and if Batman feels like he has to put down some mercenary thug killer who's about to torch to death Martha Kent then yeah I'm cool with that. Not too sure how I feel about Metropolis and Gotham City being almost as close geographically as San Francsico and Oakland but I guess I'll get use to that. Overall pretty good I think I may enjoy it more with future viewings it has a lot going for which the human brain may not be able to fully absorb the first time around.

I was at the library yesterday when I happened to come across a Batwoman TPB which included #35 which was the issue that had Ragman on the cover. I remember when I first spotted that issue during a trip to Reno over the Thanksgiving Day weekend I was initially thinking to myself this might end up being the first new comic book I end up buying for the past few years. But after giving it a quick browse it wasn't quite what I was expecting or maybe just not what I was hoping for. That's not to say it didn't have anything good in it but it turned out not to be Ragman's first appearance in the NewDCU. Nor was it a good jumping on point to start reading the story arc and it didn't turn out to be some kind of Jewish superheros themed issue which I was kinda hoping for given that both Ragman and Batwoman are Jews.
With the whole "delivering justice" theme in this clip art it seems this is a good time to remind folks that Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is not only 3 weeks away. That movie just seems to look better and better with each new promo for it. The wife and I were just discussing the whole advanced tickets thing. I really wanna see it on opening weekend like we did for Deadpool but damn who wants to deal with those crowds and lines? But did you know there's actually reserved seating at some theaters that are selling advanced tickets for those who are willing to pay a bit more? Oh decisions decisions.
March 13th update:
Just found this cool rendering of the old DC Universe version of Rick Flag on Deviant Art this morning. The description under the art work is as follows . . . <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">This is one of the Suicide Squad Illustrations that I did for the DC Films Presents-Dawn of the Justice League TV Special.
Looked into it and it can be easily found on youtube it's not bad. They have it in a five part video presentation hosted by Geoff Johns and Kevin Smith.
