Suicide Squad #5 Review: Diablo BBQs Belle Reve , King Shark eats somebody again & the hunt for Harley is on!

Regardless of what you like or dislike about the Suicide Squad relaunch one thing you can't say is that there is ever a dull moment in this book. The Squad is sent off to put down a prison riot in Belle Reve. Through out the course of the prison riot the body count continues to rise as Deadshot puts a bullet in most everything that moves, a seemingly catatonic King Shark all of a sudden eats Yo-Yo as Diablo really cuts loose for the first time in the series and BBQs half the inmates. And let's not forget Black Spider who despite being laid up in the infirmary manages to beat the shit out of and kill several inmates. He does so with what I would describe as a "Punisher" like determination and hatred of all criminals. Which makes sense since he too was a criminal hunting vigilante.Aside from all the killing we learn some interesting things in this issue. Waller apparently is either married or has a live in boyfriend and Deadshot seems to have a foster daughter. And speaking of Waller, when the riot is finally put down it doesn't take her long to figure out that it was Harley that started it some how and subsequently managed to escaped during the whole fiasco. They surmise that she's probably off to go find The Joker but quite naturally Waller has no intention of letting that happen as she cobbles together a new Suicide Squad to go after her. I suspect it's a safe bet Harley is done with the Squad as a member so all her fans out there can rejoice at long last. Of course I'll miss Harley but it'll almost be worth it to not have to hear all the bitching and moaning any more from these people on the internet.
My thoughts:
Just think of the best concert or party you've ever been to in which you had the time of your life. That's pretty much what this issue was like although it was unfortunate to see Yo-Yo get killed so soon. Black Spider was bad ass and probably could be considered the Punisher of the DC Universe while Diablo so reminded of Samuel L. Jackson from Pulp Fiction. If you don't like this book then I hope you get eaten by King Shark too. There's a nice little DC Comics All Access feature at the end of this issue with some cool production back ground information and the promise of plenty of more surprises and excitement # 6 and 7. I probably should have known this already but on an interesting side note it turns out Harley's new costume design was by Jim Lee.
Recently I decided to drop everything else I was picking up from DC every month. There's other good stuff out there but Suicide Squad was the only thing I was really looking forward to from one issue to the next.

  1. Did Yo-Yo think King Shark was domesticated or something? I'm trying to understand cause I wouldn't trust King Shark if I had aquatic telepathy.
This book is on point. 5 winning issues in a row thats a glove in the card playing world, put some white paint on your hand DC and slap the shit out of the competition so says Saruman.

  2. Oh, and Deadshot has a daughter Zoe (Deadshot mini series). If they didn't erase everything.

  4. wish I could find this title around here.

That Harley cosplay pic at the bottom of the page is one of the better ones I've seen. I think I like the Starfire one better though.

    1. yeah that Starfire cosplay pic is a tough act to follow especially since it shows so much more skin. that really sucks you don't live somewhere where this book is easily available. as you can see it's a real pleasure for me to look forward to each issue every month so i do my best to write a review on them that reflects my enthusiasm with out becoming too long winded. at least it gives you some means by which to follow the series.
hey Craig, let me know if you get some sort of notice from my reply. it seems that Blogger has a new feature that let's you do direct replies to specific people in the comments section.

    2. I didn't get an email notice. I did get your other email though. Gives new meaning to the term "collectible character bust"

  6. Damn...I was really hoping that Harley would stay longer and get the chance to develop her character more with the Suicide Squad. I really don't want to see her leave the book because the SS creative team and Glass got intimidated by the Harley "fans"' constant bitchin' and moanin' on the net, especially on tumblr. I'm really getting sick of seeing Harley with the Joker since it's obvious that two of them together just create an annoying soap opera that no sane person will entertain for long and will only drag both of the characters down and keep the two from living in the comics to their full potential. IMO, Harley has been doing wonderfully in SS. What surprises me is that her own fans are calling her to the equivalent of a skanky slut because of the way her outfit looks and the fact that she slept with Deadshot. Last I remember, in her own series back in the Y2k years, she once wore nothing but a pink teddy in front of Jimmy Olsen. I saw her wearing short-shorts both in BTAS and Gotham City Sirens and saw her in a schoolgirl outfit in Gotham City Sirens. And last but not least, she slept with her own teacher to graduate from college while she was in a relationship with a guy named Guy Kopski. I don't know about the rest of her fans but I thought her being in kind words, a loose woman with extremely low self-respect, was already a part of her character and these are the same fans that claim to have followed her ever since BTAS hit in air back in 1992?! Sheesh, these fans seriously need to get out of the fanfiction and stop focusing on her extremely obvious self-destructive relationship with the Joker and start reading about her real character.

    1. well said thanks for the comment! let's see what happens in the next couple of issue that we know Harley will be in for sure. have you seen my Youtube videos which among other things slap many of the Harley fans in the face for their incessant whining?

    2. Yes I have! :) And to be honest, I thought you were too nice with them. I have scans of the books that I just referenced in my above comment to help education these "fans" about how Harley really is outside of the Joker.

What's worse is that I'm hearing that Elise A, the famous Harley Quinn cosplayer, is planning on hijacking her character by doing this campaign called Hardly Quinn aiming to put Harley back with the Joker permanently.

    3. "too nice with them", wow i think you might be my kind of woman! sorry i didn't get back to you sooner but please keep me in the loop on how it's going with this Elise A. we could have some fun with her over here ;)

  7. Hey Dave? Where does it say that Waller has a man-buddy? I missed that part.

Also, like your comment about 'hoping whoever does not like SS, gets eaten by King Shark' - very diplomatic.

Keep it real mate - your SS pal, Jay.

    1. yeah during the riot when things are getting bad she makes a personal call. there was all this "yeah i know i said i be home by now i'm having a rough day at work" kinda talk. as for the King Shark comment, it was the kindest way i could think of telling all those people to go $%&@ themselves. even when it comes to personal blog sites we have to maintain some resemblance of respect and courtesy no? looking forward to seeing your review don't keep me waiting too long.
