It appears as if Adam Glass has finally caught up to my Suicide Squad blog (cue dramatic music!)

This just showed about a couple of hours ago in the comments section of the Amanda Waller team 7 posting from July 1st.

Now I have no way of knowing if this is the real Adam Glass or somebody just screwing with me. But based on his CBR interview this certainly sounds like Glass so I'll just go with it for now. First of all Adam I'm pretty sure my Facebook messages went to the right "Adam Glass". This is you no?

Aside from this looking like you as far as I can tell based on the CBR video interview this Adam Glass is friends with the former colorist of the Suicide Squad relaunch Val Staples (nice guy we used to chat online) and the current artist Federico Dallocchio who's done much of the penciling on the title so far.
But if you say you didn't get my FB messages for what ever reason then so be it. But fuck it it doesn't matter now. First I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to leave that rather diplomatic comment that was pretty cool of you. Of course I can't help but feel like kind of a dick for the things I've said about your work in the SS relaunch now that I've heard from you here. But it's how I felt and I was being honest about it and this blog is pretty much for that sort of thing.
However, that being said I want to reiterate that I DO NOT think you are bad writer. Because if I did I wouldn't have liked this book from the beginning. And I did for quite a while (as mentioned in the previous posting) which Val will vouch for me on that. I even used to have heated debates with others on the net who were giving it a bad wrap from the beginning. I know it's not easy even for a professional to put yourself out there like you do and soldier on even in the midst of catching Hell so I do sympathize.
I can't say in all honestly that I will continue to buy the book at the moment but I will keep following it which I would have done anyways for curiosity's sake at least. But I can promise you that in the event it genuinely starts to grab me again I certainly will be more then happy to throw down my $2.99 a month for it along with all relevant Suicide Squad tie-ins in the new DC Comics Universe.

Sincerely, The Shlomo

P.S. You better be the real Adam Glass cause if I just got punked I'm gonna be pissed! And to the rest of you my one $1 bin posting will be delayed for a couple of days for obvious reasons.

  1. Dave, man this was really cool of Adam to even respond. What I hope for is that if he has time to look over a post or two. Read a comment even, and understand were as committed to this genre as they are (hopefully).

    1. only time will tell my friend. perhaps Adam will be kind enough to grace this blog with his commentary again?

  2. I usually get nervous when writer's use phrases like "make a book my own". Because that means they're going to shove a whole bunch of what made the book great out heavily plated glass window and leave a bunch of bleeding fans strewn around. But I haven't minded a lot so far, even if I haven't caught up in the last few months. It would be nice if more writers paid a little attention to constructive feedback on their books. Not all of it, I understand the creative process, and going where the story is taking you. And especially in a serialized work it's not always apparent from month to month how that shit's going to play out. But it was neat that he actually responded. If, indeed, it is him. And not some evil imposter.

    1. Random!! I missed you!
I hope it is him too. It is good if he gets to check what readers write.

    2. Hi Aliera! Missed you too! Crazy summer, crazier kids, 'nuff said, y'know? But I had to pop in here for this.

    3. Yes, this ia a very good reason to say hello ^_^

  3. Meh. Yeah it was nice of him to even acknowledge you, so if it was him, I'll give him credit for that, but......

That still doesn't excuse what horrible messy, train-wreck of a book that title's become. Now true, my only exposures to his style of writing are only Flashpoint's Legion of Doom and this book, but still not impressed.

@Randomnerd, I hear ya' brother. I totally agree with you on those dreaded words. It's the writer attempting to spin stuff he knows is not going to make long-time fans happy, thus he has to make it seem like good things are in store, when well, they're most likely than not, going to be.

That all being said, yes writers and any creative person that puts themselves out there for public scrutiny does deserve props. I've said this before, especially on my blog....which you can find the link to here:
dbsuniverse.blogspot.com(sorry for the shameless plug Shlomo)

But hey, crap is crap no matter how you try and spin it. If it's not working, and a majority of people/fans are telling you it's not working, then it's time to take a step back and see why it's not working.

Now I will give Glass some credit here. He works at Dildo Comics, and right now they are in the mindset to drive long-time fans and creators away(case in point George Perez, Tony Isabella, Chris Robinson) with both their mistreatment of said creators and the fans. I don't know if it's all due to greed, drugs, or all of the above, but that shit needs to stop...now!

How can you honestly claim to be a business, when you're turning away long-time fans who supported you financially for the longest time, only to piss them off bad enough that they either flock to Marvel or the Indies, for the sake of getting a quick buck from potential new fans that don't even exist.

The digital comics concept isn't working, and hasn't really boosted sales long enough(initial shock sales aside)to really justify throwing away what, almost 30 years continuity for a quick buck. I know I don't have any business experience or an MBA, but that can't possibly be how you build a successful brand/product. Then again, I could be wrong.......

Okay back from that rant, I know that Glass has many bosses that want him to achieve many things or everything they need him to at that very moment, thus why he's probably not 100% free to write the book how he really wants. Okay, I can buy that. That's true in any corporate setting, so then leave. If you can't write or create how you want to, or how it should be, find something else.
Yeah we get it, you liked/loved Ostrander's SS, and you want to do this book your own way. That's fine, and you should be able to do that. But honestly, so far, not so good man. While it's true the fans don't know what's in store, or how far you've plotted story-lines and what not, if it's taking too long to get there, and make the fans feel like there's a legitimate pay-off to the crap they've had to digest thus far, then it's time to seriously re-think what you wanted to do, and where you wanted to go, story-, and character-wise.

Again, I don't know shit, so don't listen to me; just pay attention to the dwindling sales, because I suspect whatever goodwill you have so far with both the fans of Suicide Squad in general, and that of your bosses, won't save you from the cancellation axe for very much longer, that I'm sure is pretty close to dropping on you.

  4. something to take note of folks. toward the end of the comment Glass says that "we're on the same side". that kinda implies to me that there are some powers above him that are steering the books direction and that he indeed wants to implement something more like we want to see. he did say in his CBR review that not all the decisions on the title are up to him despite being the writer. it could similar to a case of the director of a movie and the movie studio coming into conflict on a project.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oh no doubt. As Eric Bischoff once said, "When you're in the entertainment business and you have a large audience, you serve many masters." I'm sure Glass has alot, if not tons of editorial interference and agendas to go through in order to do his job and at the same time try and maintain his vision of how he wants the book to look. Syncing your own vision with that of editorial/the powers that be is no doubt both frustrating and rewarding depending upon the relationship. That's why I said I give him some credit/slack on all that. It would really be interesting years and years later after he's gone or the book's cancelled, to see his true side of things, what they wanted, what he was trying to do, and how much of his vision/material actually got published.

Sure I don't fault him for doing his version of SS; good for him. But why keep out characters that are so known and associated with the team? Especially since their inclusion, no matter how brief, could help bridge the gap between the previous series. I guess we'll all have to wait and see, but don't worry Shlomo. All of this won't keep me up at night. I have much better and important things to worry about. So again, we'll see how long this current incarnation lasts, before being cancelled.

Times like these, makes you feel better as a Doom Patrol fan, because at least this type of shit isn't happening...yet.

  6. It makes you wonder about what other legalities are at play for keeping out certain characters, and what other books and writers have their little fingers pressing down on them saying "No, you can't use that right now."

    1. well, there's certainly nothing to wonder about when it comes to legalities and ROM Spaceknight. like Aliera said good to see you again i figured life has had you pretty overwhelmed lately. of course i don't have the same challenges as you do but things haven't been a bowl of cherries for me either. just trying to take it one day at a time and do my best to still find enjoyment out of the little things in life like these blogs. i assume you haven't seen Spiderman yet. Dan and all the rest of those guys pretty much don't like it but i thought as a movie going experience it wasn't bad.

    2. I haven't seen it yet, no. Although I probably won't be able to skip it. I have an eight year old tugging on me daily asking "WHENNNNNN...." So far I've fought him off with..."But we just saw the Avengers...in 3D..." And anything after that has to be a letdown. Honestly, I'm more focused right now on getting my costumes together for comicon and watching baseball as much as possible. Watching someone else mess up a movie franchise that did well the first time around isn't high on my list of priorities. Especially when I have to go see it first to vet it. Which means sitting through it TWICE, if it passes inspection. Okay. Rant over. Sorry for hijacking the blog. Everyone has their own challenges Dave-O. I'm sure you handle yours much more creatively than I handle mine. In fact, based on the evidence I'm sure of it. ;)

    3. it's not Dave-O, it's Shlomo to you :)

    4. Ah. Sorry. Missed that memo. Shlomo.
I'll have to work my tongue around that one.

    5. TWICE?
      Really?
I'm really not that interested in this one for the reason you gave, but still I'm lucky I can say to my seven year old: "It's not for your age".

  7. @Randomnerd, yeah exactly. Like take Flash for instance, no doubt there's "big plans" for Cap'n Boomerang, thus why he's most likely not in the mix. And since he's a Rogue first, I'll go with that argument. So then what's the hold-up on Count Vertigo, Bronze Tiger, Punch and Jewelee, Nightshade, and Plastique then?

And screw Spidey, I wants to go see The Dark Knight Rises.....super-bad!

    1. Bad judgement? Writer's block? The inability to pull the *ahem* trigger? Feelings of inadequacy? That might swerve back into the trigger problem.
I'm trying not to think about the Dark Knight so as not to get too antsy. It keeps my caffeine intake down to just south of suicidal.

    2. then there's also the Total Recall and Judge Dredd reboots too. i hope they turn out well. either way kiddies just remember around here, I AM THE LAW.

      Delete
    3. I shudder to think how they could make Judge Dredd worse.

      Delete
    4. I don't understand why, they're doing those two movies again. They were a pain, the first time.

      Delete
    5. well Aliera, the idea is to get em right the second time around. the concept for Total Recall and the world of Judge Dredd are cool but the studios some how managed to screw em up as films.
just take Batman for example. what if Chris Nolan had not decided to do them after the disaster that was the shit that tim burton and joel schumauker made?

      Delete
    6. Point taken! I just can't emotionaly think about Total Recall withouth cringing but if some other Nolan makes something good of it, it will be very important to lift that sensation from my brain ^_^
That will be a good deed.

  8. Shlomo -- Hey man, Adam Glass again, yes the real one. Please do me a favor. I do not care what you say or show when it comes to me. But if you can please take my facebook page down I'd appreciate it. Mostly because my kids are on it and they are truly innocent and that is for friends and family only. Cool. I know we don't see eye to eye on many things but on this I hope you can see my point. Thanks.

  9. Hey Mr. Glass!
I have to tell you, nice work on issue 12.
    I'm looking for more :)

  10. Nice - I'm glad he mentioned that. Personally for me I don't get how fans can add stars they've never met or promote the pages of the creators they follow. Fan or group pages yes, personal ones, not so much. I think if I was on the other side it would scare me a bit even though I could understand where they are coming from. So big respect to the guy for addressing his concerns and in a really decent way and in acknowledging you directly Dave.
