Secret Origins 28 (1988) Nightshade and Task Force X

This weekend I found this issue in a $1 box and even though it wasn't something I was hunting for it turned out to be a good grab. The issue opens up at Belle Reve with Nightshade talking to father Craemer and basically giving him her life's story starting with her childhood leading all the way up through the events of Suicide Squad 1 - 13. As some of you may know Nightshade is the daughter of a fugitive princess from "The Land of Nightshades" who ended up marrying some up and coming politician who is Nightshade's father. And as we see here Nightshade joined the Squad as an eventual means to an end for some personal matters.

As far as I know Nightshade never hooked up with either Flag or Nemesis. Like she said here Flag took the Squad way too seriously and Nemisis, . . . well even though she did feel something for him too he was just that "nice guy" and we all know how that goes.

On the other hand I'm pretty sure she did hook up with Captain Atom given their long history together even though some where along the lines he was also tapping Plastique's ass. But can you blame him I bet that French Canadian action must have been . . .explosive. Captain Atom may be "Nobody's favorite super hero" but at least he gets plenty of tail.

As you can see from the footnote here this story concludes with a lead in to Suicide Squad issues 14-16 which was the Nightshade Odyssey story line in which Nightshade would finally get to use The Squad on the before mentioned personal mission. Interesting enough upon reviewing those issues I now see that there is a footnote for Secret Origins 28 in Suicide Squad 15.

  1. The Land of Nightshades is FUCKED the FUCK UP!
I'm new to this character- just got my first comic with her a while ago- and I fuckin' love her! -It was a great introduction to the classic Charlton Comics character, in the DC universe; in Justice League Quarterly #14.
My most recent blog-post is about her being all bad-ass in that issue...
I picked up some more comics with her recently- one in Captain "Nobody's Favorite Superhero" Atom's book- where she's in THAT costume- which I absolutely hate. (Thanks for the quote, by the way!) -It's not the skirt, I like the skirt- but those/that goggles/mask... UGH!

    1. well Nightshade's costume has gone through several incarnations over the years and i the fan art i included in my last posting is pretty much what she had when the old DCU ended. at any rate Secret Origins #28 ended up being a pretty good tie-in to the John Ostrander run and if there's anything unclear about Nightshade's origins rest assured this issue gives it all to you in a pretty concise manner.
so as a general message to all Squad fans out there add it to your pull list and as always fuck the New DCU . . . and cartoon network for cancelling Young Justice.

  3. Fuck the NU52(why is is still called new?) and indeed cartoon network too. Not just for cancelling YJ and GL:TAS, but also for what they did to Batman: Beware the Bat. They cancel it, and then choice to fuck the fans that show did have by showing the remainder of the episodes at an ungodly hour of 3 am.

Nightshade should be used more, especially for black ops shit like the Squad. And a very decent new costume.

    1. I didn't care for it at first but I started to warm up to the GL animated series as well when they pulled the plug on it as well. never saw that Batman CG cartoon if that's what you're talking about. didn't interest from what I saw in terms of the previews.

    2. The GL CGI-cartoon was MUCH better in the 2nd season. The character-designs were always a little bland, but it had great voice-acting! It won me over.
The CGI-Batman was kind of shit, though. Especially since that's what they canceled Young Justice for!

    3. yeah i was looking at a little bit of it on youtube this past weekend out of curiosity and i thought it was pretty shitty. like you said if you're gonna cancel an awesome show like YJ you better have something pretty stellar to take it's place and that fell faaaaaar from that. so already there it had that going against it but even on it's own merits it was mediocre. so like i said fuck DC, fuck cartoon network and for good measure fuck marvel too.

    4. ~Nah, Marvel is my JAM right now! -My number one Summer jam!!! You can do some shit if you put out awesome as a majority. DC needs to learn that.

  4. Marvel has a few good things going for it, even if some of the main super books are slightly lame right now. Hawkeye is one of my favorite comics right now, much better than the Avengers at this point. Proving the fact that a good writer can pull out a good comic in the big 2 even in this day and age.
Personally, I would have loved them to put Nightshade and Flag back into SS. But apparently using characters that have actual thought behind them isn't in the plan.
Oh, and King's right. The hairdo sucks. There was a lot of that going around back then.
