John Ostrander from "another life time ago"

I found this early photo of the man John Suicide Squad Ostrander on his Facebook page. As far as how old he was in this photo he just describes it as being another life time ago. Unfortunately his Suicide Squad feels like it was from another life time ago too.
It's ironic that I miss the Rom spaceknight character because he can't be published by Marvel for legal reasons but at the same time Ostrander's Suicide Squad (which is the real one!) feels every bit as much out of reach as far as ever reading again as newly published work I'd be happy to purchase. It should also be noted that I think Greg Rucka could probably do a rebooted Suicide Squad justice as well. Maybe even Gail Simone for that matter. By the way speaking of Rucka I just found according to his Wikipedia page he was born in San Francisco which is just across the Bay from me. You can fined him on Facebook as well just in case you were wondering.

No Kobra escapes the Manhunter

Manhunter #7 written by John Ostrander left click to enlarge image
Former public defender turned bounty hunter Mark Shaw was a character that appeared through out the Ostrander Suicide Squad series. His appearances in the Suicide Squad usually coincided with DC Universe story lines that spanned several titles such as the late 80s Millennium and later in the Janus Directive. But he also has been in the pages of the Suicide Squad for internal story arcs as well such as when he helped the Squad take on a mission against the Japanese mob that was trying to obtain a huge cache of stolen Russian weapons known as The Dragon's Horde. But as seen in the above clip art it looks like some Suicide Squad related story lines crossed over into his title at one point such as The Phoenix Gambit which dealt with a brain washed Count Vertigo caught in a power struggle between Vlatavian nationals and the Russian government.

Suicide Squad #30
I'll admit I didn't know much about the character back when I was reading the Ostrander Squad series but I know that he was one of the non-super powered characters that had a variety of good skills and exotic weaponry. He was also one of the best martial arts fighters in the DC Universe having held his own against Rick Flag and eve managing to have kicked Kobra's ass. By the way DC relaunch and Adam Glass fuck you both with your lame Kobra knock off Regulas from Bassalisk. Let me leave you good people with a couple for links to some cool moments with Manhunter (with Rick Flag and Boomerang too) in the pages of the Ostrander Squad  http://random-happenstance.blogspot.com/search?q=Suicide+Squad+Annual+%231    as well as this cool video of the DC Universe Classic 6" figure  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2pi3oOw50c

Watch out for The Ayatollha Boomarang!

Left click to enlarge
Between my two comic book related blogs I just feel so . . empty when it comes to this one right now. The Suicide Squad relaunch still sucks and this is the first Saturday where I don't have a new episode of Young Justice or Green Lantern to look forward too. I mean it's not like they didn't have re-runs before but you at least knew some where down the road new episodes were coming. And to add insult to injury have you noticed that cartoon network still keeps saying "all new episodes" when they do their YJ promo advertising?

So I'm really in need of s little something to boost my spirits and this scene with Captain Boomerang from Suicide Squad # 32 (1989) never ceases to amuse me. I love this clip art for two reasons, one because it's Boomerang at some of his best and two because I love to see my favorite writers make political commentaries that are inline with my views. Aside from Boomerang's antics in the heat of battle Ostrander is obviously offering his on views about iran's tyrannical ayatollhas and their religious fundamentalist polices.

Now I know there's no real substitute for now getting a weekly dose of a new ass kicking episode of Young Justice but this might ease your withdrawal symptoms a bit. This is a really well done video montage of some of the best Young Justice moments complimented by a really good sound track. I do hate most of those fan made music videos from TV shows but this one is an exception: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d36o32eZUyY
