Good memories of Saturday mornings with the 80s and Young Justice

Oh I'm just feeling a little sentimental today. What a damn good show all around YJ between between the animation style, good writing and solid character development. Come to think of it I believe Young Justice is the first time since I was a kid did I find myself waking up to a Saturday morning cartoon. As far as Saturday mornings went hands down my absolute favorites were Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, The Incredible HULK, Super Powers (DC) and Thundar The Barbarian. And although the theme music for all of them was cool you just can't beat the one from Spiderman & His Amazing Friends.

  1. Shlomo my friend, you pulled these right out my head. This is a damn good starter list. And your write up is truth partner. These cartoons had well developed characters. They were so well developed that you could easily take one of the supporting characters and make them the lead or give them a spin off series.

Do you remember the episode a Starfire is born? By far my favorite episode of Spiderman and his Amazing Friends. Saturday morning made kids get the Hell up at 6:00 in the morning to get their cartoon watching on correctly.

No other shows has done that since; until Young Justice hit town. And just like a grade school kid I had to watch it every Saturday. Couldn't miss it or my day just didn't go right. But I wasn't by myself Young Justice had people hooked. From about 8 years old to old Dogg's like me were in front of the TV set with a bowl of Crunch Berries.

    1. ya know i left a response to this comment earlier today and then it just disappeared that's really fucken irritating. just before the internet came around some of these Walmart kinda stores used to carry VHS videos of some of these early Marvel cartoons. one of the ones i bought was "A Firestar is Born". i always liked that episode much of that had to do with the X-Men being in it.

    2. Yeah man the X-men are attached to Starfire's origin. The comics havn't even done her as well as that show has. And I remember my little kid heart beating out of my chest when Storm (the real one) flew into action and did her thing. Man Saturday morning was it.

@Random: Batman (tas), Justice League/Unlimited and Young Justice sit at the top tier of animation greatness. It's a few others that make up the top ten but DC did it sooo right with these three.

  2. I know my kids were enthralled with Young Justice, at least as much as I was. And they're spoiled. They get to tape the good shows and watch them when they want. Maybe if that had been the case when I was little I would have learned to sleep in properly, which I still can't do. Even on a Saturday. Spiderman and His Amazing friends was one of my favorite shows, ever. And the one superhero show that stuck in my head until Batman, the Animated Series. I loved the others, don't get me wrong, but that was the end and beginning of Super Heroes animated at the time for me. Probably because it had Spidey and Iceman in it, which were always two of my favorites.
Thanks for the memories, Shlomo. It's always a pleasure. :)

    1. Girl you might not believe me but Young Justice connected me with my youngest nephew and his gears of war playing crew of friends and connected us to my older teenage son, nephew and cousins that are past cartoons, comics and the such. The age groups I'm talking about is 5 years 10 years and 20 years apart. After YJ, we split and go our own animated viewing ways. We didn't all watch it together but we all talked about it together. I've never seen another animated series that could do that. I thought it was amazing.

    2. That is fantastic! Proving once again that love of Super Heroes well written can bring diverse groups together. My kids disagree on just about every cartoon these days. The oldest one is moving away from animation entirely. But they'll all sit and watch YJ or Justice League, or Batman all together. Not even Phineas and Ferb can do that anymore.

  3. Right? Hey when done right, all, if not most of these cartoons should be able to transcend age limits, and just be entertaining.

But yeah, the cartoons Shlomo mentioned I too remember fondly. hell I even remember watching re-runs of the old 60's Iron Man and Hulk cartoons, then the 70's FF w/H.E.R.B.I.E.

The whole forced inclusion of Herbie was so laughable because stupid execs though kids would set themselves on fire to emulate the Human Torch, thus in comes Herbie....a robot, and not a very good one either.
I wonder who got fucked with more out of that era, Herbie or The Thing and his thing ring. Remember that? "Thing ring do your thing!"
    Crazy.
