BIG WOW Comic Festival San Jose CA. Greg Rucka

On the DC end of this weekend's con in San Jose I'm hoping to get a chance to have a few words with Greg Rucka. In a way Rucka is almost as synonymous with The Suicide Squad as John Ostrander thanks to his work on Checkmate (volume 2) and on the OMAC Project story line. But in general I've always loved how his writing interweaves history and contemporary geo-politics into his stories which always gave his writing a very "real" feel for me. Needless to say I'll be sure to mention if I get a chance to talk to him is that the New52 Squad title would be way better if he were writing it. As it turns out Rucka was born in San Francisco and grew in the Monterey area which is about a two hour drive south. Ironically San Jose is pretty much at the half way point between the two regions.

By the way at the end of this review for #29 the reviewer mentions that the series is getting cancelled. I found out that #30 is the final issue and a long over due mercy killing for this series but I also found out that it will be relaunched YET AGAIN (volume 2) as "The New Suicide Squad". Ever heard that term "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"?

John Ostrander from "another life time ago"

I found this early photo of the man John Suicide Squad Ostrander on his Facebook page. As far as how old he was in this photo he just describes it as being another life time ago. Unfortunately his Suicide Squad feels like it was from another life time ago too.
It's ironic that I miss the Rom spaceknight character because he can't be published by Marvel for legal reasons but at the same time Ostrander's Suicide Squad (which is the real one!) feels every bit as much out of reach as far as ever reading again as newly published work I'd be happy to purchase. It should also be noted that I think Greg Rucka could probably do a rebooted Suicide Squad justice as well. Maybe even Gail Simone for that matter. By the way speaking of Rucka I just found according to his Wikipedia page he was born in San Francisco which is just across the Bay from me. You can fined him on Facebook as well just in case you were wondering.

What happened to the Squad that I used to know?

I was just feeling kinda sentimental about the Ostrander Suicide Squad era of  late. Ditto for Greg Rucka's work on Suicide Squad related narratives in his story lines most notably in Checkmate. That awesome Deadshot panel is from Checkmate #18 which was the beginning of the "Fall of the Wall" story line. I've been meaning to post that for a while now. That was a really good story line among others things Amanda Waller was confronted about running Task Force X covertly even though as the White Queen directing field operations was not in her mandate.
Below is a page that I randomly found on the net from what I believe is an issue of  DC's Countdown that chronicled the super villain round up efforts for Operation Salvation Run. In the last year or so I've found a few of these Countdown tie-in back issues (mostly in $1 boxes I'm happy to say) so hopefully I'll find this one too some day soon. I really miss this stuff from the old DCU. Now I won't even have new episodes of Young Justice to look forward to before long with the recent bad news. There's always back issue boxes but when it came to new stuff Young Justice was all I had to look forward to with DC comics.

Just wanted to update you folks on that Nightwing Captain Boomerang Jr. issue I mentioned in the last posting. I ended up going back to my local comic shop to see if I could find it again that $1 box and indeed I did so I got it using my trade in credit. This ended up being a really good issue and among other things this is where Owen quits The Outsiders: http://www.comixology.com/Outsiders-Five-of-a-Kind-1-of-5-Nightwing-Boomerang/digital-comic/JUN070159
http://majorspoilers.com/2007/07/27/dc-comics-sneak-peek-of-the-week-7/#more-1975
http://thebatfamily.wordpress.com/ http://www.comicvine.com/forums/battles/7/marvel-vs-dc-war-the-avengersdecoy-elite-vs-the-bat-familydane/578017/  After having read this issue I see now that it wasn't just Owen's Captain Boomerang legacy that had Batman a bit leery of Owen's membership in The Outsiders. It was also because of him having worked for Amanda Waller which he was actually still doing. As I mentioned earlier in this posting running Task Force X (official name for the Suicide Squad) was something Waller and King Faraday (her bishop) tried to keep quiet but that secret eventually ended up being discovered as scene in this clip art from the Outsiders Checkmate crossover storyline. Waller, Faraday and Count Vertigo were all eventually ousted from Checkmate at around the same time Owen left the Outsiders after which they were all working together again at Belle Reve as seen in the 2007 From the Ashes 9 issue Suicide Squad mini-series written by John Ostrander.

Rather it was in the pages of Checkmate, DC Countdown, Salvation Run or in Suicide Squad titles (but not the Giffen series) this was the era where buying and reading the Suicide Squad was a real joy. But with the relaunch, it's barely worth my time to follow it online.

Please be sure to read the Kim Yale dedicated portion of the article. Yale was John Ostrander's late wife and she co-wrote the original series with her husband.

John Ostrander interview from Wizard Magazine 192 (2008) part 1of 3

Most of you may no doubt recognize this as the same Wizard issue Dale Teabagwell from Mr. Morbids House of Fun posted recently: http://dbsuniverse.blogspot.com/2012/07/suicidal-tendencies.html I'm just posting the article here again in a format that will make it much easier to read.
I'll post each of all three parts every couple of days. I highly recommend reading all three posts that article has everything from the research that was done for Boomerang's Aussie slang to the inspiration for transforming the post "Killing Joke" Barbara Gordon into the enduring character we all know today as Oracle.
